In Johannesburg, helmets are to be handed over at an event highly-symbolic of the roll-out of the “Helmet 4 Life” initiative

On May 14, at the TotalEnergies Senderwood service station in Johannesburg, an event is being organized to hand over helmets and run a road safety awareness session for the hundred or so two-wheeler drivers due to attend. The event marks a full year rolling out the “Helmet 4 Life” initiative, supported by the TotalEnergies Foundation program and locally by 42 TotalEnergies affiliates across three continents.

In Johannesburg, on the afternoon of May 14, the one hundred drivers to receive helmets will be welcomed by Mariam Kane-Garcia Managing Director & CEO TotalEnergies Marketing South Africa (PTY) Ltd, Country Chair TotalEnergies in South Africa and by Jacques-Emmanuel Saulnier, Senior Vice President Citizenship Engagement & General Delegate of TotalEnergies corporate Foundation.

It is also an opportunity for them to benefit from the advice of Jean Todt, a leading road-safety professional, whose admirable career in motor sports and the automobile industry speaks for itself. But the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety / International Peace Institute Directors Board’s Chair is also present as the initiator and leader of the “Global Safe and Affordable Helmet Campaign,” and one of the key steps in the campaign is happening in Johannesburg today.

What is the “Helmets 4 Life” initiative?

Kicked off in 2023, the initiative aims to hand out 100,000 helmets by the end of 2024 in 42 countries in Africa, Asia Pacific (India, Cambodia, Vietnam) and in America (Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Chile). To date, 30 countries worldwide have deployed “Helmets 4 Life”.

By supplying helmets compliant with the most stringent safety standards, suitable for use in hot and humid climates, and by organizing comprehensive road-safety awareness sessions, the initiative aims to both provide drivers with proper equipment and raise their awareness to the importance of protective equipment and safe driving practices.
