Total and Michelin Join Forces to Launch an Ambitious Worldwide Road Safety Education Program Targeting 10-18 Year-Olds
Montreal – Total and Michelin, leading global players in mobility, are launching a major road safety education program for 10-18 year-olds via their corporate foundations. The project, developed with the support of the Global Road Safety Partnership, aims to reach 100,000 young people over a threeyear period. Total Foundation and the Michelin Corporate Foundation have decided to jointly contribute €1.5 million to the initiative.
Throughout the world, road accidents take the lives of more than 227,000 people under the age of 20 each year and are the leading cause of death for 15-17 year-olds. Designed to make a genuine impact on sustainable and safer mobility, this unique cooperation between Total and Michelin will initially be launched in France, Cameroon and India. The plan is then to rapidly expand to other countries and welcome new partners into the program.
In partnership with local and regional educational communities, the Total and Michelin corporate foundations together seek to provide solutions that take into account local realities and to measure their impact. The road safety education program for 10-18 year-olds will be developed using an innovative digital platform. Drawing on the local presence of Total and Michelin affiliates, and with the support of local partners and stakeholders, the platform will facilitate deployment of learning materials to the community of teachers and educators. It will also highlight best practices and assess the relevance of the various initiatives. The end goal is to develop a tool fully customized to the needs of local communities.
“Safety is one of the Group’s key values and our commitment to transportation safety is a priority,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total. “Our drivers cover more than 700 million kilometers per year, placing mobility at the center of Total’s business. Today, we are sharing our specific road safety expertise with local communities to help prevent road accidents, through this educational partnership developed with Michelin. Our deep roots in our host communities will ensure the project’s success. By addressing 10-18 year-olds directly, we have a golden opportunity to make them future road safety ambassadors and to contribute, through education, to saving lives.”
Jean-Dominique Senard, Chief Executive Officer of the Michelin group, said: “We are all convinced that digital tools offer a new opportunity to engage in highly targeted, even bespoke, interaction with people. This innovative program, developed in close cooperation with the Total Foundation teams, will turn this conviction into a priority initiative: making our roads safer for children and teenagers. At a time in their lives when they are gaining independence, we want to provide them the means to learn in harmony with their community.”
