Coming Together to Celebrate International Women’s Day!
Adopted by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. Marked by initiatives and rallies across the globe, it aims to inform and remind citizens about women’s issues, as well as raise general awareness. International Women’s Day is also an opportunity to look back on the struggles and accomplishments that have advanced gender equality across all cultural, economic and political spheres.
From women’s suffrage, labor rights, access to contraception and equal division of household labor, though to the right to respect, women’s rights have progressed but not one country has achieved full gender equality. Women continue to face significant discrimination throughout their lives. Globally, 2.7 billion women are still legally restricted from having the same choice of jobs as men, fewer than 25% of women hold parliamentary seats, and one in three women experience violence at home or in public.
In 2020, the theme of International Women’s Day is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. It coincides with the new U.N. Women campaign to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, considered the most progressive blueprint for advancing women’s rights.
Total Foundation is also committed to pushing back the boundaries all year long in favor of women’s rights and participation in civic and economic life.
